Phileo BBQ

It was a dark and gloomy day and it occasionally rained... However, a few faithful and optimistic YAFers dutifully made their way to Rymill Park for our Phileo bbq. Minutes before we were meant to start, it POURED! :( But we decided to stay put and wait it out and our decision paid off! Because in 5 minutes, God answered our prayers and cleared the sky and we were able to continue with our plan. :)

So we started with a few games before lunch.

1) Water balloon Captain's Ball!

It was quite a precarious game, with people trying to gently throw water balloons to each other...

And while most of us were busy having fun, two of our faithful sisters started the cooking... :) THANK YOU!

After we had enough of the water balloons, we moved on to our next game- Tug-Of-War!
Our first try was a fail cause the rope broke! Hmmm. I never knew we had such strong people in YAF! Now we'll know who to go to when we need brute strength! >.<
But after fiddling with the rope for a bit, we had one more go at it and it worked! :D

And after all the games, we were getting really hungry, so we all slowly congregated near the bbq pit... Waiting to be fed... :D Which we were!

And after a filling lunch, we had a few more games to get to know each other before heading home. :)

We truly thank God for answering our prayers and holding back the rain! And for the wonderful fellowship we had with our brothers and sisters in Christ! :)
May we all continue to strive together as a body of Christ in all that we do to bring Him all glory and honour!

What is Christmas All About?

Introduction:

Christmas is about the Almighty Creator of the universe who is not Himself part of the creation, moving himself, in the Person of His Son, into the universe that He made. And what makes this fact even more amazing is that this created universe—the personal part of it, the moral part of it—is in rebellion against its holy, loving and merciful Maker, and yet He came into the universe that He made in order to save those who are in active rebellion against Him. What is Christmas all about? One of the remarkable statements and answers in all the Scriptures is 1 Timothy 1:15, "…Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners…" Henceforth, Christmas is about something God initiated—something God did in the history of mankind. It has to do with the way the created universe relates to the one Being who is absolute—no beginning and no ending, self-sustaining, no changing—He simply is who He is. In fact, God says in Exodus 3:14 that his name is "I am that I am." Christmas is about how this great this Creator God relates to us and how we relate to Him. In fact, the gospel of Luke 1:26-38, where the Christmas account is recorded, tells us how this absolute God broke into his creation to save sinners.

How did the Creator of the universe break into His Universe?

By Performing the Impossible

Luke 1:37, "For with God nothing shall be impossible." Archangel of God, Gabriel, gives Mary the bottom line answer for how the Creator of universe can become man in the womb of a virgin. When all our objections have spent themselves, this truth remains: "With God nothing shall be impossible." God had been preparing the world for this impossibility for thousands of years. Listen to the testimonies: Genesis 18:14, "Is any thing too hard for the LORD?..." Job 42:2, "I know that thou canst do every thing, and that no thought can be withholden from thee." Jeremiah 32:17, "…behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee." And the time has come for the most impossible thing to be done: God enters his creation as part of it, and without ceasing to be the uncreated God.

By Choosing to Enter Through a Virgin

In Luke 1:26-27 Luke says, "…the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a virgin …" The angel says to her in verse 31, "And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS." And Mary responds in verse 34, "…How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?" In other words, Mary is saying, "I am only betrothed, but I am not married. My marriage with Joseph is not been consummated yet." Yet, this was God's choice. An angel sent from God to a virgin. God's way of breaking into the universe was that He would be conceived in the womb of a virgin. We should not surmise very far from the text why God did it this way. The clearest answer is in verse 35, "….The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God." God chose to be conceived in the womb of a virgin so that the fatherhood of this Holy Child would be absolutely unique—He is the Son of God, not the son of Joseph. He has a Divine Father, not a biological human father. He is therefore Divine as the Son of God, and a sinless human as Mary's son, not Joseph's son. God chose to break into the universe by choosing to enter through a virgin.

By choosing for his Son a legal human father who would be an heir of David, the king of Israel

Luke 1:27, "…a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David…" For two thousand years, since the days of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, God had been preparing for this moment in history. Promise after promise had pointed to the day when a son of David would come, a king, an heir to the throne. Prophet Isaiah said, "And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious." (Isaiah 11:10). And at the end of the Bible in the book of Revelation (22:16), Jesus waves his ensign or banner over all of history with the words, "I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star."

The Creator of the universe broke into the universe not as a generic human being, but as a Jew, in fulfillment of 2000 years of covenant promises so that Israel would glorify God for his truthfulness and all the nations would glorify God for his mercy. He came as the Son of David and as the Son of God—a Jew to vindicate every promise, and a man to identify with every nation!

By Sending His Holy Ghost with Divine Power to Impregnate the Virgin

Mary asks in Luke 1:34, "…How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?" And the next verse (Luke 1:35) must be one of the most important statements that has ever been made in any book in all of history. You ask "How," Mary? Here's how: "The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God." God himself, the Holy Spirit, with miraculous working power—the power of the Most High—will take the place of a human father, and under the shadow of His wing Mary will become pregnant with the Son of God in a way most Pure, Virtuous, Holy, Unseen, Mysterious!

Conclusion:

That is what Luke tells us what Christmas is all about. The Creator of the universe broke into the universe by doing the impossible, by choosing to enter the universe through a virgin, by choosing a legal human father who would be an heir of David, the king of Israel, by sending his Holy Spirit with divine power to impregnate the Virgin Mary with a divine child.

Dear friends, would you come to Jesus Christ who came into this world some two thousands years ago and trust Him as your Lord and Saviour this Christmas?

Warrawong Outing!

In the year so far, the Phileo Sub-Committee has taken us on quite a few adventures! In May, we woke up bright and early one Saturday morning and made our way down to WARRAWONG WILDLIFE SANCTUARY. We were eager beavers to get some much needed exercise as we trudged around excitedly looking for some native Australian animals. The short photolog below documents our exciting travels! :)

Death Throes

Dinosaur and pterosaur skeletons are often found in this characteristic posture: head thrown back, hind limbs bent, tail extended. The “dead dinosaur posture” is found in other fossils too—the best known being the fossil bird Archaeopteryx shown here. There are so many fossils found in this posture that a recent article in New Scientist said there are “Too many, in fact, to be a coincidence.”1

This is not news to paleontologists. The question of why so many fossils exhibit this posture “has troubled paleontologists for more than a century”.1 In his 1927 book on taphonomy (i.e. how dead organisms are thought to have been buried and fossilized), German geologist Yohannes Weigelt suggested that the “dead dinosaur posture” was caused by the contraction of the tendons as the dead animal dries out. Others have proposed “diving into mud and becoming stuck”, dying while asleep, rigor mortis, dehydration in salt water, and being dragged into position by moving water.

But to paleontologist Cynthia Marshall Faux, of the Museum of the Rockies in Montana, USA, none of these ideas rang true. Marshall Faux had spent many hours as a volunteer veterinarian at the Montana Raptor Conservation Center, working to save the lives of injured birds of prey. Not all of the injured birds survived, which meant that Marshall Faux had lots of hands-on dealings with dead and dying birds—something that other paleontologists had not experienced for themselves. So she could see that the paleontology fraternity’s attempts to explain the widespread “dead dinosaur posture” did not fit with reality.

“I’d read in the literature about rigor mortis, tendons drying out and all, but it didn’t mesh with what I know from my experience as a vet. Dead bodies moving? That didn’t make sense.” Instead, Marshall Faux knew that animals dying from being poisoned or hit by a car often adopt the posture while still (barely) alive.

Reality check
Marshall Faux decided to put the various death-pose theories to rigorous testing.

1.She observed freshly dead birds going into rigor mortis and out of it again—but “never once” did they move.
2.She tried drying out carcasses to see if their withering muscles, tendons and ligaments contorted their limbs. The carcasses dried out—but no movement at all.
3.After an experiment where rapidly-dried tendons did not contract at all, Marshall Faux said that if a drying tendon cannot even dislodge a small pin from a Styrofoam sheet, it’s hard to picture it moving a dinosaur’s head!
4.To test the “dehydration by salt water” theory, Marshall Faux put quail carcasses in buckets of salt water. The dead quails “steadfastly refused to sink”2 and had not changed their posture by the time that the buckets had accumulated “excessive bacterial overgrowth” and had to be thrown out.

As for the other theories, Marshall Faux and her paleontologist colleague Kevin Padian of the University of California ruled out dying while asleep, as “no known animal sleeps in that posture”.1,3 And the suggestion that carcasses were dragged into that position by moving water doesn’t fit with certain fossils having a death pose with neck and limbs pointing in opposite directions—unlikely in fast-moving currents. Further, Padian and Marshall Faux wonder how plausible is it that creatures around the world dived into mud and became stuck?

So for Marshall Faux there’s only one possible explanation: death throes. She and other vets affirm that animals go into the “opisthotonic posture” shortly before they die (not after) because of muscle spasms resulting from severe malfunction of the central nervous system. In short, a shortage of oxygen. So, what might have caused the asphyxiation of the many fossilized creatures beautifully preserved in the “dead dinosaur posture”?

A world drowned
Although Marshall Faux and Padian might not want to acknowledge it, the Bible speaks of a catastrophic event—on a global scale—which simply explains the dying pose of so many of the fossils they have studied. The Flood of Noah’s day was utterly devastating, as “everything on dry land that had the breath of life in its nostrils died”, i.e. “men and animals and the creatures that move along the ground and the birds of the air” (Genesis 7:22–23).

The final agonized death throes of some of those creatures can still be seen today—a testament to rapid burial under muddy layers of now-hardened sediment which thwarted bacterial decay and predators. Surely an unmistakeable legacy that people everywhere would do well to ponder (Luke 17:26–30 , 2 Peter 3:3–7,15 ).

YAF & S4C MasterChef Competition 06 August 2010!

Pin drop silence. The air was so still, you could cut it with a knife...

And cut with a knife we did! Not just chopping and slicing, but carving and mincing and all sorts of fancy-schmancy moves! The YAF organised a MasterChef cooking competition on 6 August and invited all the YAFers and Sparks4Christ to come and test their culinary skills!

After the initial explanation by the Phileo Sub-Committee, the enthusiastic and rambunctious YAFers and Sparks ooh-ed and ahh-ed as they previewed the ingredient they were given.

They plotted in hushed and secretive voices their plan for WORLD DOMINATION!! Ahem, I mean, the title of MASTERCHEF! :)

After much debate and discussion, it was off to the preparation stage! With all the group members working in harmony to produce a taste sensation so delicate, so delectable, so perfect... Ahhh...

After an hour of working very hard, time was up and the YAFers and Sparks had to add the finishing touches!

They plated up really beautiful dishes!

Finally, it was time for all the groups to sit down and eat the scrumptious food!

While the judges had to work so tirelessly trying every single yummy creation! :)

All in all, the food was indeed wonderful and seeing the unity of the YAFers and Sparks as they happily worked together was also a great blessing! Thank God for this opportunity we had to spend time with each other as brothers and sisters in Christ, and the fellowship we had over dinner! A big thank you to all the Phileo members who planned, videorecorded, photographed, publicised and organised this event! Last but not least, thank you to everyone who came and participated and made it such an enjoyable night. :) May we continue to grow in unity and love for one another and may we always glorify God in all that we do! :)

Ever embarked on a long journey? Let me show you the most important road trip of your life on "The Romans Road"...

There is none righteous, no, not one. (Romans 3:10)

Do you think you are a good person? Take this test and see how well you fare!

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23)

If you were to meet the Prime Minister or President tonight, would you not wear your best clothes? If the best is for the king of the land, what more for the King of the Universe? Unfortunately, no matter how little we sin, we still fall short of God's sinless standard.

Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned. (Romans 5:12)

Anyone ever had to teach a child to lie? Sin is disobedience against God. Adam disobeyed God and through him, all man are tainted with sin. This reality of original sin is clearly seen in a child’s natural tendency towards jealousy, bad temper, malice and falsehood - childhood sins which appear without adult tuition.

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23)

Earlier, we read from the Bible that death entered into the world via sin and is passed upon all man. Now, we know that this is because the wages of sin is death. This death is not only the physical bodily death, but also the spiritual eternal death. BUT God has a gift for man. Will you receive this gift?

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)

Do you need God? "God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16) Jesus died on the cross for our sins, that whoever receives Him into their heart shall have their sins washed away by His blood.

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. (Romans 10:9)

Why mouth and heart? "For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." (Romans 10:10) When need to confess our sins to God, repent and turn to Him. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;" (Acts 3:19)

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Romans 10:13)

Receive Jesus into your heart today and make Him the Lord of your life. Because Jesus rose from the dead, we know that He has overcome sin, death and Hell. Through Christ, we who believe shall have the same victory.

Dear friends, not all roads lead to Rome but the Roman's road is the world's oldest road. Construction started 6000 years ago after the Creation and was completed 2000 years ago with our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Many did begin but not all finish. What about you?

Who Are We?

The Young Adults Fellowship (YAF) of Hope Bible-Presbyterian Church is a group of dedicated, friendly and encouraging young people. We support each other and grow together in Christ.

As a group of young people, we focus on the spiritual needs of those in university and in the work force.

What Do We Do?

Our main purpose is to encourage each other through the fellowship that we have in Christ and to teach young adults some of the lessons, concepts and principles taught and instructed in the Bible.

In order to reach these objectives, the YAF has regular Bible Studies, Share and Prayer sessions to encourage one another and grow in Christ as one, Workshops to help our young adults tackle difficult issues of everyday life at University and work. Occasionally, there are group outings, as well as camps, where we get a chance to get to know each other better.

When And Where Do We Meet?

YAF gatherings are held on Friday nights at our Church (82 Wattle St, Fullarton).

The meetings start at 7:30pm and end at approximately 9:30pm followed by a time for supper, giving everyone ample opportunity to catch up with each other and have fellowship with one another.

Please feel free to give us a call, send us an email or sms and we will be happy to arrange transport for you! If you are taking public transport, take bus number 171 and alight at stop 8. Turn right at the traffic lights and a short walk down Wattle Street will lead you to Hope B-P Church!

Love YOUR Lord. Love means that we obey God, submit to authority, care for one another, without dissimulation, without a contentious spirit, always willing, always with the right heart and motives. “Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:” 1 Timothy 1:5 “… what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,” Deut 10:12b

Equipping the Saints. The things of the world pass away, but the wisdom of God is the only thing of worth. We remember the early Christian martyrs who died for the cause of the Gospel. May we too have the fervency and commitment, that we may be in our own little way the light and salt of the earth that we can disciple others also through our words, our teaching and leadership and through our lives. “And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.” 2 Timothy 2:2

Woohoo! Praise and thank God for all the students who have finished their exams and assignments! Well, as the last instalment of this "series", I'd like to say a big thank you to the Committee Members, all the Bible Study leaders and every YAFer for the year that has gone by. :) As we learnt from the book of Joshua and also the QNS videos, I pray that we can recall and bring to mind the lessons we have been taught by the Lord, more importantly that we apply them into our daily lives as we walk on this earth, but live for heaven. That the Lord will truly be able to say to us, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord." Matthew 25:21 With everything we have heard over the year, may we also be able to share the lessons with others so that they too would be blessed. Remember, we are called not only to be disciples, but to also disciple.

A. Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.

Incline Your Heart Oftentimes as disciples of Christ we face many trials and tribulations, and we truly feel blessed by the support and prayers of our fellow believers. Likewise, when we see others in need, we need to give our utmost for their sake. “Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.” 1 Peter 1:22 Simply put, “Let brotherly love continue.” Hebrews 13:1

Preaching the Gospel. The Great Commission is given to all disciples of Christ, it sends us out into the world to tell of Christ. There is never a “right” time or a “wrong” time, only that we should “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.” 2 Timothy 2:4 “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” Matthew 28:19-20

YAFers, for the students, exams and assignments are rolling by or have rolled by, now as we spend time during our holidays, and especially as the year draws to an end, let us take some time to reflect on our lives. Have we been kind, loving and caring towards our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ? Have we been fervent in our service towards God in sharing the Gospel? What have we done for Christ that He would be pleased with? Even as we study hard in university, or work hard at our jobs, and just go about our daily lives, let us remember this simple but important lesson,

"Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God." 1 Corinthians 10:31

Serving One Another. God has all given each and every one of us talents that we need to use them to the fullest potential for His glory, to serve God in every way possible, by our words, by our deeds, by our thoughts. “As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” 1 Peter 4:10

Contentment in Christ. Truly, “… what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” Mark 8:36 We do not need anything fancy, we do not need anything grand, all we need is just wholehearted submission and love for God. Christ has taught us “Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?... But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:25, 33 Quieting a Noisy Soul remember? My soul can rest because I know God is more than enough. God has never failed you once, will He do so now? Trust Him, trust His promises.

YAFers, especially during this tough time of assignments and exams for the students, let us not forget what we have learnt in Quieting a Noisy Soul during the year - true rest, peace, contentment, comfort and strength comes from above. Let us not rely on our own wisdom and strength, which can achieve nothing, but put our trust wholly in Him. Verse for the week: "The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth." Psalm 145:18

An Introduction of Sorts

Hello my fellow BASICs!

(BASICs, you ask, what does that mean? Well, it is the acronym for “Brothers And Sisters In Christ”, which is a fitting name for us Christians, which I might elaborate on further down or in a later post. But I digress. On to article proper…)

Greetings in the name of our Precious Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ! I hope this “letter” finds you all well and close to the Lord. When I was first thought about writing this inaugural post, I felt a great deal of privilege and honour to be able to address my YAFers (and any visitors) in this manner, yet along with that came uncertainty, trepidation and fear, would I be able to write something that was encouraging and edifying for the YAFers, and bring glory to the Lord? I settled down in prayer.

Well, YAFers, as you all are hopefully well aware, the theme for the year is “DISCIPLE”, with the theme verse, “Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” Matthew 16:24

The YAF Committee decided on this as we believed and hoped that in 2008, foundations in Christianity had already been built, and this year, we wanted to be both a noun, but also a (transitive) verb, that is, wanting not just to be a disciple, but to disciple. :)

So what are some things that are important to being a disciple? Nothing fancy, they are very “basic”. :)

Dying to Self. We cannot do anything if this first step is not taken, we need to realise our own pride and sinfulness, give up our “old man” and submit to Him. “… for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.” 1 Peter 5:5b John the Baptist aptly said, “He must increase, but I must decrease.” John 3:30 This, my dear BASICs, is the most fundamental foundational truth of our Christian growth, without this there is no true repentance, no true renewal, no true regeneration.

Instil, Inspire, Increase. “Instilling the knowledge.” “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. “ 2 Timothy 2:15 A disciple is first and foremost a pupil, a student of the Living Word which is the “Inspiration of God”. RPG right? Read, pray, and grow! We need to start by praying faithfully and fervently to God for guidance through His Word. “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17 “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” James 5:16b “Increasing our Faith” Being a disciple is not an easy road to follow, we need to count the cost of discipleship, we will face many trials and tribulations but “That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:” 1 Peter 1:7

Serving One Another.

Contentment in Christ.

Incline Your Heart.

Preaching the Gospel.

Love YOUR Lord.

Equipping the Saints.

YAFers, again, I must reiterate, these are just some very rudimentary truths taught to us since we were young, for those of us who attended Sunday School. However, although my writing is far from perfect and the words neither eloquent, interesting, deep nor meaningful, these are lessons we learn all throughout life and never stop on this journey of sanctification. Each week I will put up two of the letters that form the word “DISCIPLE”, so I am sure you are all eagerly anticipating the next instalment! :) Haha. I joke, I joke. Anyway, additionally, I will give you another verse that you can meditate on for the week. Praying and hoping that the verse will speak to you in a very special way. :) Thanks and have a very blessed week ahead!
